Anyone here use Alexa for home lighting? How does that work?

We've got recessed lighting and I was thinking about getting bulbs compatible with Alexa but I don't really understand it how all that fancy stuff works. Do the bulbs themselves have something built into them to communicate with the Alexa so that when I say "Alexa, turn on living room lights" they just come on? Or do I need to buy a separate thing that acts as a middle man between Alexa and the bulbs? Also, is it even worth it? Or is just a fun little novelty thing that really doesn't serve much purpose?
